At a time when kids programming was all about fast and loud and talking down to children, Mister Rogers show stood out. He was about kindness, self-worth, and bringing light to the darkness. I could not wait to see “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.”
And I loved this movie. I sobbed during the whole thing, especially in remembering this duet with Lady Aberlin and Daniel Tiger as Daniel wonders if he was a mistake. That one really got me. I felt like a small child all over again.
As the movie points out, if you’re going to have these self-doubts that become your refrain, at least make it a duet, with someone who loves you singing the parts that remind you of your worth.
I am so glad Mister Rogers continues to be honored and valued as the benevolent force he was.
