My obsession this summer has been solar lights made from old glass I find here and there. I just love how these look in the garden and they’re so fun to make. These are smaller than some of the other ones I’ve done like this one from the beginning of the summer or this pair where I first started using solar lights.
Here’s the latest one I did using glasses, an old ashtray, and some dishes. All in gold.
I really love it when I can use an old ashtray for something like this. I get them for ten cents each at rummages because everyone wants to get rid of them. Nice to upcycle something that no one thinks has any value.
I flip the ashtrays over and use them for a base for these lights.
I also like glasses where the solar light can fit snugly inside.
I like how glass looks. That’s one reason I enjoy crafting with them. I just think they’re beautiful when you put them together.
I haven’t decided whether I will keep this one or sell it… but somehow I suspect it will find its way into my yard.

That’s a nice size for putting on a table. What a lovely ambiance that would provide.
Cherie says
Thanks, Eileen.
Cyndi L says
I agree with Eileen…are you thinking about moving any of them inside for winter?
Cherie says
Naw, I leave them all out all winter. They stay together just fine. Plus, the lights are so nice during those long winter months.
Cyndi L says
Now I realize that kind of sounded stupid since they’re SOLAR lights, but could they sit in a sunny window?
Cherie says
Yes, I think anywhere they could get light to them would work. I have a couple solar lights that aren’t directly in the sunlight and work at night.
