Oh the quotable Ralph Waldo Emerson. He’s got some great ones. Here is one I’ve read pretty often.
What you do speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you say.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
The quote, of course, means that your actions speaks so much more loudly than your words. I’ve seen this witnessed time and time again, in myself and other people. Don’t we wish we could see into the intent of someone? I always wish people could see my good intentions, especially when I do something stupid or slip up.
On the flip side, I wish I could see beyond the “nice” words people say sometimes to see their real meaning, their real intent. I’m a little slow on seeing when someone is insincere. Often it takes my hubby to point it out. He’s got a knack for it, and when he shows me what I’ve been ignoring (or more like denying) I usually have to reluctantly agree that he’s right.
Things like Facebook make it harder still. Someone says “yay” or “that’s great” and then you see them in person and they show you how they really feel. It’s weird.
I thought this was a good quote to put up considering Christmas is right around the corner. How many times do we have the best intentions on a gift but fall short? I try really hard to get things people will appreciate, but sometimes I miss the mark. We all just do our best, you know?
This was also a great quote to put up at the end of the year. No matter what people think about resolutions, the end of one year and beginning of the next does make you think, plan, want to accomplish things, want to do better…. and this quote helps you to see the actions you make. I hope we all make good choices in the upcoming year!
